This week marked the launch of the Skills for Success programme at The Kirkley Centre in Lowestoft — a powerful joint initiative delivered by GLA Group, MENTA, East Suffolk Council, the Suffolk Community Foundation and the Probation Service.
Running over three weeks, the programme is designed to reach individuals who are furthest from the labour market, offering practical training and meaningful opportunities to gain skills, confidence and direction. The course includes CSCS training and testing, labouring skills, and self-employment and entrepreneurship support — giving participants a well-rounded foundation to move into work or further training.
Why Labouring?
Because everyone has to start somewhere. Labouring is more than lifting and carrying — it’s about doing tasks properly, safely and efficiently. This week’s learners have proven just how valuable that foundation can be.
Alongside classroom-based learning, the cohort has been applying their skills to improve the outside space at The Kirkley Centre itself. They’ve put their knowledge into action with a range of real-world tasks, including:
Replacing and replanting hanging baskets
Clearing out French drains and laying pea shingle
Replacing external pipe brackets
Cleaning UPVC soffits and fascia
Removing moss from paths and walkways
Each job began with a Method Statement, written by the learners and followed by their peers — teaching them the value of planning, communication and working as a team. The practical tasks also built on core site safety principles, incorporating Manual Handling, Working at Height, Asbestos Awareness, Recycling and Ladder Training.
By working methodically, learners completed tasks to a high standard — reinforcing the mindset and habits that employers value most.
More Than Just Tasks
This programme isn’t just about passing tests or ticking boxes. It’s about showing what’s possible. With every completed task, the learners are building the foundations of employability: showing they can plan, follow procedures, work safely and take pride in their efforts.
And that’s the heart of Skills for Success — giving people the tools to move forward, contribute to their community, and become part of the future workforce.
