A skilled labourer is essential to the success of every construction project. Often unseen but always crucial, labourers ensure that the foundation for any task, whether in construction or cleaning, is laid with precision and care. Our GLA Labouring Skills Course offers hands-on training, equipping you with the necessary skills to excel in one of the most essential roles in construction and maintenance.
This course combines both theory and practical experience to teach learners the key aspects of labouring, from safety procedures to hands-on task management.
What the Course Covers
Learners will gain practical experience and an understanding of essential labouring skills, including:

Manual Handling Techniques

Working at Heights Safely

Ladder Safety and Awareness
-
Asbestos Awareness
-
Planning and Preparation for Tasks

Method Statement Development
-
Task Completion (e.g., Building Maintenance, Cleaning, Product Movement)
The course places emphasis on completing tasks safely and efficiently, ensuring learners are equipped to handle a variety of practical scenarios with confidence.
Course Format

Length: 2 weeks

Group size: Up to 10 learners

Location: Delivered inside HMPs, job centres, or at community and employer sites

Assessment: Practical exercises, tutor observation and module-based written knowledge checks

Support available: PPE provided, financial assistance where eligible, Employment Broker interviews during course
Outcomes
At the end of the course, learners will:

Understand key labouring terminology and safety procedures

Be able to safely carry out manual handling, work at heights, and use ladders

Be proficient in creating method statements for task planning and preparation

Demonstrate safe, efficient, and professional work practices

Be ready to pursue employment, further training, or apprenticeships in construction or maintenance
