A standout small project with life-changing impact
We’re proud to share that GLA Group, in partnership with Sika UK, has been shortlisted for the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) Awards 2025 in the Best Small Project category — for our work on the Art Shack at HMP Hollesley Bay.
This nomination recognises not only the quality of the roofing installation, but the depth of its social value. What began as a leaking roof on a creative space inside a prison became a powerful example of how vocational training, partnership, and trust can lead to lasting transformation.
About the Project
The Art Shack is a timber-framed structure within HMP Hollesley Bay, built by residents and used for music, arts and crafts. After years of wear, the bitumen felt roof had deteriorated and was no longer fit for purpose. Rather than simply repair it, the project created a unique opportunity for learning in action.
Six learners who had completed GLA’s Single Ply Flat Roofing course took on the task under the guidance of GLA tutor Mark Jones and technical support from Sika UK. The chosen solution — a fully adhered Sarnafil® single ply membrane system — was installed over four days, ahead of schedule and to a high professional standard.
Why It Matters
This was no ordinary training session. It was the first time many of the learners had applied their new skills outside the classroom. The challenges were real: an out-of-square roof, open-edge working conditions, and a fragile timber deck. Every decision, every cut, every weld had consequences.
With careful scaffolding, full PPE, and expert supervision, the learners worked in small groups to complete the roof — demonstrating not only technical ability but teamwork, planning and pride.
“This project shows what happens when training is matched with trust. It’s proof that small projects can have huge impact — not just on buildings, but on people’s futures.”— Andy Bird, Director, GLA Group
A Model for Change
Sika donated materials and offered on-site guidance throughout the project. The roof was completed using industry-standard detailing and fixing techniques, and delivered by people who had only weeks earlier been learning the trade for the first time.
The result is a watertight, fully restored community space and six individuals who leave prison with more than just a certificate — they leave with experience, belief, and the start of a pathway into work.
Being shortlisted in the Best Small Project category is a proud moment for everyone involved. It affirms what we’ve always believed: when training is done well and in partnership with industry, even the smallest projects can have lasting impact.
